Shai Hope's Record 162* Powers West Indies to Historic Win Over India

West Indies captain Shai Hope produced a magnificent unbeaten 162 to power his side to a historic five-wicket victory over India in the third and final ODI in New Chandigarh on October 3, 2026, denying the hosts a series clean sweep.

Record-breaking chase

Chasing 352 — West Indies' highest successful ODI run chase — Hope anchored the innings with an unbeaten 162 off 143 balls, studded with 17 fours and three sixes.

After the early loss of John Campbell, Hope combined with Amir Jangoo for a crucial 109-run stand to steady the innings. Jangoo struck his third ODI half-century before being run out for 67, while Sherfane Rutherford fell soon after for 24.

Despite the dismissals of Keemo Paul and Matthew Forde, Hope remained in control of the chase. Gudakesh Motie contributed a brisk 19 off 14 balls as West Indies sealed victory with 10 balls to spare.

Records tumble

Hope's 162 is the highest individual score by a West Indies batter in a successful ODI run chase, surpassing Chris Gayle's 162 against England in 2019. He also became the first West Indies batter to score 150 or more in a successful ODI chase against India.

The innings is also the highest individual score by any batter in an ODI run chase against India, going past Tillakaratne Dilshan's 160 in Rajkot in 2009.

Hope's knock marked his eighth ODI century as a wicketkeeper-captain — the most by any player in the format, ahead of MS Dhoni's six. He also reached his 21st ODI hundred in his 152nd innings, making him the joint-third fastest to the milestone alongside Quinton de Kock and David Warner.

India's innings

India were forced to rebuild after slipping to 4-2, but Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad steadied the innings with a 137-run partnership. Sharma anchored the recovery with a fluent 92 off 85 balls before falling eight runs short of a century.

After Rohit's dismissal, KL Rahul made the most of his lone batting opportunity of the series, bringing up his ninth ODI hundred. Rahul accelerated sharply at the death, smashing 42 runs off the final 12 balls he faced to finish unbeaten on 129.

With Rahul unbeaten on 129, India finished at 351-7, with late cameos from Naman Dhir (30 off 21 balls) and Anshul Kamboj (17 off nine balls).

Series result

The Shubman Gill-led side had already secured the series by winning the opening two ODIs. In the second match, India completed a record chase of 406 with 6.3 overs to spare to seal the series.

India still won the three-match series 2-1, but West Indies' consolation win was their first ODI victory over India since 2023.
